Term 4 - Perseverance

Week beginning 25th February 2019

This week we introduced the story of Noah’s Ark and our new value Perseverance. We also learnt about St. David’s Day, which is on Friday 1st March, and our new PSHE Jigsaw topic ‘Healthy Me’. This involves us teaching the children and thinking about what we need to do to have a healthy body and mind and we will also be thinking about Stranger Awareness and thinking about saying no to adults if they are behaving strangely, whether we know them or not.

Week beginning 4th March 2019

This week we have been thinking about life as running a race and how we need to persevere in all that we do, especially the tricky things. We watched an athletics race where an athlete fell and got back up and carried despite being so far behind. We then talked to our friends about what they may be striving today and said quiet prayers for them to encourage them. We also learned about Shrove Tuesday.

Week beginning 11th March 2019

This week we learnt about Katherine Switzer, the woman who entered the Boston Marathon in 1967 when only men were allowed to race. I showed the children the video of the race official trying to stop her from running and shared the words she said to her coach during the race ‘no matter what, I have to finish this race. Even if you can’t, I have to - even on my hands and knees. If I don’t finish, people will say women can’t do it, and they will say I was just doing this for the publicity or something.’ The children really understood what great perseverance Katherine showed in the face of adversity and how she changed the world for female runners. Our GLOW team then led our worship on Tuesday and were giving free reign to say why they had learnt about Perseverance. Riley have some really great examples of real life perseverance he had seen his friends and dad use recently and Jess was brilliant as my tech support.

Week beginning 18th March 2019

This week we welcomed Belinda Stowe, one of our Foundation Governors, in to bring Jack in the box to teach the children about perseverance. The GLOW team did a brilliant job of helping to tell the story of Nehemiah and how he showed perseverance in rebuilding his city. Miss Smith taught the children about Buddhism as Thursday was the day Buddhists celebrate Magha Puja Day. We have also been busy practising our Easter songs.
