Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
Just a reminder that this week in school is sports week!
We have an action packed week planned for the children (we are praying for dry weather!) so please can children come dressed in sports kit every day – this doesn’t need to be school PE uniform. We realise it is too much to wash and dry their school sports clothes every night so something comfortable that the children can run around in and trainers would be great!
Tuesday is sports day however, so coloured tops on this day please. (Unfortunately no parents invited in this year). Children will also need a water bottle, sun hat and sun cream applied before school please if it is hot.
We are kicking off the week with a visit from 3 Bristol Rovers’ coaches and some rugby training from ex-professional rugby player and current Head Coach for Rosslyn Park - Jonathan Mills on Monday. We also have a Tokyo Olympics day amongst other things and plenty more sporting visitors throughout the week.
Huge thanks to Mrs Botteley for planning such an inspiring week and we really hope the children will have lots of fun and be inspired to try something new!
Due to reviewed guidance that has been sent to schools this week we will unfortunately no longer be able to invite Y2 family members to watch the Leavers’ production in the Church. We are so disappointed but have to prioritise everyone’s safety and ensure we are water tight in our risk assessment. Instead we would like to invite one adult per child to the field to see the children receive their leavers’ bears and to hear staff something about each child’s journey at CCI.
Guidance now says that we can have up to 30 people outside at leavers events but not inside, hence the change. We will still film the productions for you and are so sorry to have to make this necessary change;
Mon 12th July at 2.15pm Penguin Leavers’ bears on field
Thu 15th July at 2.15pm Zebra Leavers’ bears on field
Fri 16th July at 2.15pm Cheetah Leavers’ bears on field
The COVID symptoms we all need to be aware of have also been added to as the Delta variant seems to have the following symptoms so please also be mindful of these;
With hay fever being so severe at the moment this is very difficult to identify so if in doubt keep children off school and book a test for peace of mind. The other symptoms of a high temperature, persistent cough and loss of sense of taste or smell will still be relevant.

Wow what an amazing selection of scarecrows! They were all fantastic and it was such fun walking around Downend and spotting them all. Thank you to everyone who made such an effort in making one and to everyone who brought a map and joined in with the trail. We raised over £800 from this event. It has been wonderful to welcome the children back to school this week to a really exciting topic and in fantastic weather. The Sporting Superstars launch day was fantastic and the children in EYFS loved competing in lots of different races and relays and hearing about which sporting stars their staff respect and admire.
In KS1 it became a highly competitive affair where each class tried to beat the 3 teacher challenges that had been set by Mrs Rylands, Miss Gould and Mr Jones. They all looked exhausted (the staff especially!!!) but very, very happy by the end of the first day back. I’d like to say thank you to you all for remembering the sports clothes on the first day back and to the staff for making this such a fun return for the children.
CSET have made the very difficult decision that they have to cancel the Y2 part of the MAD Olympiad this year due to numbers of cases rising again locally and the high numbers of children who attend in KS1. We believe this is being postponed to T1 but it is unlikely the Y3s would then go as would have only just started at CCJ and it wouldn’t feel particularly sensible or safe to take children who are not yet established at the school or with the staff to such an open and unpredictable event. Instead CSET will go to CCJ to do some in-house events for the children instead so they haven’t missed out.
We had a special worship outside with Reverend Jo Vickery to say goodbye to him before he retires after 40 years as a vicar and 19 years at Christ Church in Downend. The classes sat apart because we had plenty of space thanks to the glorious weather and it felt fairly momentous to talk to them as a whole school. The behaviour of the children was absolutely stunning and I am so proud of the lasting impression they will have given Jo. Considering the field is usually a play space for them, then walked into their spaces wonderfully and sat and listened in such a calm way. Jo told the children that they are lucky to be at CCI but we are the lucky ones to have such incredible children. They have coped with so much in their lives and today coped with yet another change and different expectations and they stepped right up and did us proud. It was lovely to say goodbye to Jo in such a special way and we wish him and his family all the very best of luck.
